Mastermind Creations R09 Eupatorium - Pictorial Review

After series of official releases, let us continue with a 3rd party releases, this time by Mastermind Creations. After Cynicus, presenting R-09 Eupatorium, MMC's take on Elita One (also as Elita-One and Elita-1).

Pic Credit : TFWiki

Just like Optimus Prime, it wasn't always Elita One. Before the war, the soon-to-be Elita One, Ariel, is a young dockworker and girlfriend of Orion Pax. Due to Orion Pax's bad judgement call, Ariel was gunned down by Megatron trying to save him which she later was reconstructed by Alpha Trion  as Elita One.

Hunt For The Decepticons Elita-1

Elita-1 is also the name of one of the 3 sisters appearing in Revenge of the Fallen but let us just forget about her...

Since Eupatorium is a retool of Azalea, this review will be brief. Review of previous usage of the mold can be found below

In Package

Eupatorium comes in a box with the same design as other Reformatted series releases with a artwork of their Not-Elita One on the front.

Back View

Instruction Sheet/Comic Book

Tech Spec

Just like Azalea, Epatorium comes with a flight stand and twin blasters. However, instead of the twin sabers, she comes with an energy bow.

Alt Mode

First, it might be puzzling to see that Eupatorium in alt mode is quite different from the previous variants considering she is just a retool of them. What happened actually is the wing pieces are attached to the front of the alt mode rather than the side making the alt mode looks longer and streamlined.

Side View

All three weapons that comes with her can be attached to the alt mode. While the twin blasters are quite visible, the energy bow can be stored nicely at the back. One thing that bothers me though, the overall paint scheme for Eupatorium made her looks really plain in alt mode, just like Zinnia. Would've been better if there's a bit of detailing on the hood or the cockpit.

Robot Mode

Despite what I said about her plain color scheme in alt mode, she looks quite okay and detailed in robot mode with the combination of red, pink and white. She shares the same mold as previous variants except for a new head.

The lips look a bit weird in some angle of lighting but overall MMC did a good job with her head sculpt. For fans who knew the character, there won't be a problem recognizing her as Elita One.

Side View

Back View
The quality is pretty much the same but somehow, her left leg keeps on popping off when I'm transforming her between modes. That's a problem I never had with the previous variants.

Giving her an energy bow is a good decision by MMC, not only because I'm tired seeing the variants packed with the same accessories but also, she looks damn cool using the bow. Eupatorium comes with a ball jointed head, ball jointed shoulders, double-jointed elbows, wrist swivels, ball joints on the thigh, double-jointed knees and ankle swivels/hinges.

As an alternative, the energy bow can also be attached to the blaster forming some sort of crossbow-like weapon.

Like I said, brief review. Next stop, Salvia Prominon herself. Stay tuned!

Mastermind Creations R10 Salvia Prominon - Pictorial Review

Now, closing on Mastermind Creations' fembot, the sixth variant homaging one of the Thirteen, R-10 Salvia Prominon aka Not-Solus Prime

Pic Credit : TFWiki

In IDW G1 continuity, Solus Prime is one of the Thirteen, the first Transformers created by Primus. She is known for her phenomenal crafting ability, creating weapons for the other Primes, including the Star Saber and the Matrix of Leadership.

It was said by Nexus Prime that war between the Thirteen and their tribes broke off after Megatronus broken his promise to Solus Prime. She and most of the Thirteen left Cybertron to other planets where Solus Prime resided and started the Caminus Colony.

Reviews of previous variants can be found below

Again, this is the 6th release of the mold hence the review will be very brief.

Comic Book/Instructions Manual

The comic book that comes with Salvia Prominon contained a huge and important plot, tying the fembots with future releases of MMC Not-Decepticon Justice Division (DJD).

Bio Card

Salvia Prominon comes with the most weapons of all the sixth releases. Overall, she comes with the same weapon as Azaleas with addition of her "Forge" Hammer or better known as the Forge of Solus.

In addition to that, Salvia Prominon also comes with an extra pair of wing pieces for R-08Z Zinnia.

Alt Mode

Unlike Eupatorium's dull paint scheme, Salvia Prominon comes in a rather vibrance and well balanced mixture of gold, light purple and green. The configuration used is the same as Eupatorium with the wings attached to the front part of the alt mode rather than the side.

With this paint app, all the detailing are finally visible, from front to back.

Just like Eupatorium's energy bow, Salvia Priminon's hammer can be attached to the back of the alt mode. However, be careful when disassembling the hammer for storage as the handle is attached quite tightly to the head.

Comparison with R-09 Eupatorium

Robot Mode

Honestly, Salvia Prominon is my favorite of all Mastermind Creations' fembots. However, just like Eupatiorium, Salvia Prominon's left leg pops off quite easily when transforming between mode, something that I never experienced with the first 4 variants.

Her paint schemes not only work for her alt mode but also robot mode. The gold paint really fitting her persona and 'Prominon' status (read : Prime).

Back View
Not only, the translucent light green parts is a really nice touch, enhancing her overall look.

Even though the head sculpt does not accurately representing Solus Prime, MMC did really well designing their own version (and to be fair, I don't think IDW had ever revealed Solus Prime's true face).

Comparison with R-09 Eupatorium

Equipped with the "Forge" Hammer, Salvia Prominon really looks great. Paired with her wide range of articulations, she is a really fun figure to play with.

The grip on the hammer is quite loose but not up to the point of it falling off.

The head sculpt, the weapon...does she reminded you of Marvel's new Thor?

It's been roughly 1 year since Azalea Stealth Assassin was released (before normal Azalea on November 2014) and Salvia Prominon is a fitting end for the variants (unless there's more repaints to come). The figure is properly done and despite only having a retooled head and a new weapon, the overall aesthetic is perfect and just like I said, fitting here "Prominon" status.

[Possible Botcon 2015 Exclusive] Black Skids [Unofficial Name] - Pictorial Review

This is a gallery and brief review of a figure, rumored to be part of Botcon 2015 exclusive line-up. There's no official name for him yet, so we'll just call him Black Skids for now.

This variant is said to be a homage to the black Diaclone version of Skids/Crosscut.

Pic Credit : TFWiki

Review of the previous variants can be found below

Alt Mode

Just as the name implied, this variant of Skids comes in black paint app with red highlights nicely put on the side. This is a bit different compared to the Diaclone version where the stripes on the side are yellow rather than red.

Just like IDW Skids, Crosscut and Rollbar, the rims are fully painted unlike normal Generation releases generally.

And just like the others, the paint app on the back are minimum.

The guns that he came with are in light grey unlike Skids that came with dark grey guns.

Group Shots

From left, Hasbro Rollbar, IDW Skids, Black Skids, IDW Crosscut and Takara Rollbar.

Robot Mode

Black and red! Gorgeous! Despite being a straight repaint, I really like how he turn out.

Side View

Back View

Like I said, he is a straight repaint of Skids without any retool. Usually that does bother me but if he really is "Diaclone Skids", it make sense to retain the original head.

Fold-up shoulder cannons

The paint job on the shoulder missiles is a bit disappointing as the finishing is not really clean. Maybe the official release will be better?

And just like all the variants after Skids, the thighs are assembled correctly so there's no problem to his range of movement.

This picture reminded me of why I love mold-collecting!

SDCC 2015 Exclusive Transformers Generations : Combiner Hunters Chromia - Pictorial Review

Mid of the year, a great time for unknown exclusives. After [supposedly] Botcon 2015 Black Skids review, we will continue with another figure who was at first, thought to be another Botcon exclusive but turn out to be part of a 3-pack Combiner Hunters set, available at San Diego Comic Con 2015. Let us first start with Chromia. However, just to make clear, mine doesn't come with the big sword (as in promo pictures) nor can I confirmed that the paint scheme is final.

Pic Credit : Web
Again, the review will be short as it's a repaint of a figure I reviewed before. The review for normal version of Chromia can be found here.

Alt Mode

The first thing I noticed is the wicked light blue tribal tattoo/flame on the front and the side of the bike. A really nice touch but personally I would've prefered for them to extend towards the back.

The overall paint apps can be considered clean and some of them are metallic blue, something that Takara version of this figure should've had, just like their releases few years back. The translucent parts are dark red instead of clear (Hasbro Chromia) and light blue (Takara Chromia).

Back View

Really nice touch on the front

Like I said, I don't have the big sword, only the normal gun just like previous Chromias. And I don't know if there's any other extra weapons or accessories that supposed to come with her. Only time will tell.

Group Shots

Compared all three, I think this version of Chromia is the most striking with the best paint application overall.

Robot Mode

Being a direct repaint, there's nothing different in terms of the transformation and overall, the joints are solid and tight. In robot mode, this version of Chromia has more white and grey compared to the previous 2 variants. The placement of the colors are well-thought-of without any parts looking weird or out of place.

Side View

Back View

Seems like the theme of the set, Chromia's face comes with carefully done war paint and blue lips. The overall paint apps and finishing for the is quite clean.

Initially, the paint scheme is not something I can get behind of but in hand, she looks okay and very unique.

Gema's Angels

Let the hunt begin!
Stay tuned for [possibly] Botcon 2015 G2 General Optimus and Combiner Hunters Arcee.

SDCC 2015 Exclusive Transformers Generations : Combiner Hunters Arcee - Pictorial Review

Continuing with Combiner Hunters set, now we'll proceed with Arcee. Sorry as I don't have Windblade right now, hopefully will manage to find he in near future.

Just like Chromia, Arcee didn't come with the large sword and also missing her two guns which I'm not sure whether that's how she's supposed to be or not.

Let's continue.

Alt Mode

The approach for Arcee's paint scheme is different compared to Chromia. While the latter comes with metallic paint job (on certain parts) and flame/tribal tattoo, Arcee comes in normal black and pink paint scheme.

Side View

Back View
On the back, the paint app is quite minimal. Aside from the pink stripe, there's literally no other detailing.

Despite lacking detailing on the back, the hood of the car is nicely done with pink, grey and blue stripes.

The swords that she came with is the same as both previous releases.

Comparison Shots

Robot Mode

Black and pink, my favorite pairing. Well...not exactly, basically black color always work for me.

Side View

Back View

There's another thing that I'm not sure of. Based on promo pictures, the paint on the face is not like mine which is only one-sided. I'll try and get confirmation as soon as I can. Also, the finishing on the chest is not really clean as there are smudges if you look closely.

I get the idea of her paint scheme but to be honest, it doesn't really work with this mold.

Arcee's mold is a bit too feminine, both her face/head sculpt and also her body (especially the big thighs).

Still, some of the poses work though. Not great but good enough.

Comparison Shots

I can easily get behind Chromia's paint scheme but Arcee is whole nother story. For now, I guess I must conclude the review for the set unless, like I said, I manage to get Windblade in the near future.

Botcon 2015 General Optimus Prime - Pictorial Review

For now, this will be the last review of Botcon 2015 exclusives, haven't got any plan to acquire any of them in near time. This is a review of General Optimus Prime, a redeco of Generations Roadbuster, a homage to the unreleased G2 General Optimus Prime (would have been a redeco of G2 Dirtbag).

Pic Credit : TFWiki

It was revealed that General Optimus Prime will be part of Botcon 2015 souvenir set, together with Sgt Hound a repaint of Generations Scoop.

Alt Mode

Botcon General Optimus Prime is basically Generations Roadbuster with green military camouflage.

Side View
The paint apps and finishing is nicely done and detailed. Even the rims are fully painted.

Not sure about the others but when I first saw him, the camo itself is not enough to identify him. Luckily, the G2 Autobot logo narrowed down the search.

While the original G2 version transformed into a dumper truck, having a new version of General Optimus Prime that transform into a fully weaponize off-road vehichle is not really a bad choice (personally).

Comparison Shots

Left to Right : Generations Roadbuster, Takara Legends Roadbuster, Cloud Roadbuster, Botcon General Optimus Prime.

Robot Mode

Personally, the alt mode is just okay for me, not bad but not great either. But I'm really surprised how the robot mode turn out to be with G2 General Optimus Prime's paint scheme.

Side View

Back view

Not only he has the same star on the chest just like the unreleased G2 version, the head sculpt does resembles the original mold which can explain why Roadbuster mold was chosen in the first place.

G2 Dirtbag (mold intended to be used by G2 General Optimus Prime
Pic Credit : tfarchive.com

The quality of the figure is pretty much the same as previous variants and the joints are even tighter than my Generations Roadbuster.

I'm not sure how are the weapons are supposed to be attached for him  so I guess we'll have to wait for the stock photos.

For some, the mold choice might be a turn off, even for a Prime collector but to me, it's unique as not many Optimus Prime toys that comes with a non-Prime head (as the original G2 figure was).

Mastermind Creations R-01C Terminus Hexatron Continuum - Pictorial Review

$

Sorry for not having new reviews recently, was in the middle of moving to a new house and also my daughter was not well for quite some time.

This review of MMC R-01C Terminus Hexatron Continuum will be brief as the main review had been done for R-01 Terminus Hexatron. This figure is the 4th variant after Hexatron Super Nova (Limited Edition), Terminus Hexatron and Terminus Hexatron Shadow Emissary.

In Package

This is by far my favorite packaging compared to the rest of Hexatron's variants. It's not that the packaging of the Reformatted Line is bad or anything, but there's something about the badass artwork on the box that I love so much. But is that it?

Nope, inside there's a second clear packaging, homaging G1-style packaging. While I personally don't prefer this clear packaging as they tend to crack overtime, with proper care and handling, I don't think there will be a problem here.

Back View
The Japanese style artwork at the back of the box really gives me G1 Headmaster vibes.

Hexatron comes with a collector card and an instruction booklet (without any comic book or anything), simpler compared to previous variants.

So let's move on to the first alt mode, Winged Wolf (I will comment of the differences of this figure during in the robot mode part of the review).

Winged Wolf Mode

The main improvement made for this mode is that MMC fixed the wolf's head as it is no longer loose and easier to pose now.

APC Mode

The APC mode doesn't have any differences aside from a cleaner look on top of it as Continuum version doesn't come with a lot of weapon aside from the 2 blasters. And I really like it better as the mode doesn't look overcrowded with unnecessary parts.

Laser Pistol Mode

The downside is, however, the Laser Pistol mode looks a bit too simple and plain without the long blasters that came with normal Hexatron (you can attached his new blasters at the side but a bit to short to give the same aesthetic).

Tank Mode

One thing that I was worried about upon hearing Continuum version will come with chrome blasters is that the handles will chip when attached, in Tank Mode, based on my experience with Shadow Emissary version, due to the thickness of the chrome. Luckily, that wasn't the case. There's no sign of chrome chipping from my 3-4 times attaching the blasters.

Star Fighter Mode

Robot Mode

Now, for the best part.

There's few changes made by MMC for Continuum version, which actually fulfilling my wish when they first annouced Hexatron. MMC changed the chest wings, making them less angular compared to normal Hexatron, and accurate to G1 toy.

Next, a better head sculpt compared to the rounded Hexatron head we get before.

Side View
The detachable hubcaps cum shurikens were replaced with normal, chrome hubcaps. This is a change that I don't really mind as I don't feel the shurikens are practical to begin with.

Honestly, I don't really like the fact that MMC released yet another variant of Hexatron after Shadow Emissary but after holding Continuum in hand, man I glad they did (just feel sorry for those who would've wanted this but ended up buying the first version when it came out)

Contiuum version comes in brighter turquoise and purple with nicely done, glossy finishing, much like Masterpiece figures while the wings are light blue instead of grey-ish white

Back View

I really like the overall feel of Continuum compared to normal version of Hexatron. Not that there's anything wrong with normal Hexatron but it feels like there's slight improvement made by MMC for Continuum version on the joints. Given that the figure is already quite heavy, the glossy paint on the body gives an illusion that they are die-cast parts rather than normal plastic.

I am not a fan of 3rd party repaints, especially if they are not different character and I really hated the fact that Hexatron was getting yet ANOTHER repaint after Shadow Emissary. However, I'm fairly impressed with the finish product and he's definately the ultimate version of Hexatron and Sixshot! The weapons that was not made available were optional to begin with so no issues here.

So, who should get him?
1 - MMC Completist? No question
2 - People who don't have Hexatron? Absolutely. This will be the ultimate version of Sixshot (for now)
3 - People who already have the first version of Hexatron? Of course! Sell that and get him instead. Can't sell it? Buy Continuum nonetheless!
Sorry for the short review. Next, Sixshot's son

Generations Combiner Wars Titan Class Devastator - Pictorial Review

$
0
0
This review is courtesy of Hasbro Malaysia and MyToy. This is a review unit, will hit the shelves in Malaysia around July/August.

Almost every year, there will be at least one Generations figure that fans look forward to. There are quite a few interesting official releases that were revealed for 2015 Generations Combiner Wars line like Leader Class Megatron, Ultra Magnus, the Stunticons, Aerialbots, Protectobots and few others. Personally, the most intriguing would be Titan Class Devastator, the 2nd Titan Class ever released.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised with the choice they made considering the other three combiners are around leader class and they already planned a more suiting Titan Class figure to be released within this couple of years (hush hush for now). However, knowing that Devastator is the most iconic combiner, the decision doesn't really feels weird.

So, let's get right it, one member of the Constructicons at a time.

1 - In Package

The box is quite big, compared to regular releases but for those who are familiar with Titan Metroplex's box size, this wouldn't surprised you much. The artwork on the front looks really good, I must say.

The tech spec design can be seen on the top left corner of the box.

There are few characters can be seen on the box, battling Devastator but I'm not sure whether they were intended to be anything or not.

Back View

In case people are wondering, that's how tall the box is compared to Deluxe Generation Arcee and Chromia.

Devastator comes with a big front-and-back instruction sheet, and also a tech spec (not in picture). On one side there are instructions to transform the Constructicons from robot to alt mode while the other, forming Devastator.

Other than that, Devastator comes with a pair of missile launchers that convert into forearms (sorry the picture looks too dark after I upload it), a gun and also chest armor.

The Big Gun

Devastator Chest Armor

2 - Hook

Alt Mode

You'll see me saying this a lot of time in this review but Hook's alt mode is a really nice throwback to G1 version of Hook which transform into Nissan Diesel Unic truck crane.

Side View
A bit disappointing but not surprising, the rims are all black without any detailing except for the green pegs that are visible. The shade of green and purple almost, if not exactly the same as G1 version of the toy. However, there's not much detailing can be seen line compared to his predecessor which comes with yellow stripes on the crane (among others).

Back View

The rear is not fully covered as that's where the head is in robot mode.

There's not much functional parts on Hook's alt mode aside from the crane (fix, can't be extended) as even the base of the crane is not rotatable.

The purple part at the middle of the alt mode is actually a compartment where Devastator's head is stored. Surprisingly, compared to previous 3rd party version of Hook, he's the only version that could conceal the head fully.

Robot Mode

Transformation to robot mode is quite simple, almost like G1 Hook which I think is intentional. Some might be surprised at first to see that the figure is quite hollow. This is not something new as that's how the build starting from Generations IDW but due to his size, it looks more obvious.

Side View
Since the crane is fix and non-retractable, it touches the ground even when Hook standing straight (but not up to the point of pushing him forward).

Back View
The design on the back is quite clean except for the crane which is not an issue for me considering that's one of the traits of the character. However, as you can see, the base of the crane is not at the center but rather slightly to the left.

The base can be slide to from the side to the center but not all the way due to the compartment blocking it.

The head sculpt is perfectly done, capturing Hook's face. The detailing on the chest is based on the G1 toy version but not exactly the same.

Articulation wise, he's a bit limited. Hook comes with a ball-jointed head, swivel and hinge on the shoulders and elbow, ball-jointed hips, hinge on the knees and also ankle tilts. The abcense of waist joint is acceptable considering how his transformation is but the basid elbow joints are really disappoiting, even more so that other parts were done nicely.

Combiner Mode

The transformation to combiner mode is really straightforward, reminded me a lot of G1 Hook. The combiner mode holds quite nicely together.

A lot of people were surprised when it was revealed that the shoulder uses C-Clip to attached the shoulders. However, those are not actually the combiner port but rather to connect Hook with the base of Scavenger and Bonecrusher.

On the underside, there are 2 connectors and 2 pegs used when attaching Hook with Long Haul.

3 - Long Haul

Alt Mode

I'm not totally sure what's Long Haul's alt mode is based on but it does look similar to the alt mode of G1 Long Haul, Hitachi DH321 mining dump truck. The alt mode is the most sturdy of all 6 members, not to mentioned the biggest.

Side View

The alt mode overall is quite clean except for the visible purple forearms on the side. That's the only thing differentiating him with his G1 version.

The detailing is quite basic as the alt mode is quite plain aside from the front part of the alt mode.

Robot Mode

Now, the thing that stirred the fans when first revealed. Long Haul is the most basic of all the Constructicons, and having weird proportion. Transformation is also basic with parts quite similar to TFC version of Long Haul. Now, for those who wondered about the size, take a look at this

The Transformers: Robot In Disguise #29
Pic Credit : TFWiki

Side View

Back View
Unlike the G1 version where the dumping tray transform into the legs, the Generation version leave the tray hanging on the back, much like the approach taken by TFC before.

The head sculpt is nicely done and spot on. Although, the green square on his forehead looks a bit weird.

Aside from the limited hand articulations, Long Haul actually comes with a decent articulation overall.

Long Haul comes with a swivel-jointed head, hinge and swivel on the shoulders, sideways hinge on the elbow, ratcheting waist swivels, ratcheting universal joint on the hips, ratcheting hinge on the knees and also ankle tilts.

Combiner Mode

Long Haul transform into Devastator's torso and upper leg, as he did in G1 series. Alone, Long Haul shoulders doesn't really peg in anywhere but stays securely once fully combined.

The connector for the legs are different that what I've expected. There are several pegs where Mixmaster and Scrapper will be attached rather than using combiner ports.

4 - Scavenger

Alt Mode

Despite looking the same as G1 version of Scavenger, Generations Scavenger transform into a different version of excavator where the cab is at the front left rather than in the middle, left side of the alt mode.

That, and the lack of yellow stripes on the side are pretty much the only noticable difference between him and the G1 version.

The alt mode is clean where there's almost no visible robot parts. Everything pegs together nicely but doesn't really feel as solid as the first 2 figures.

The boom and the arm are attached via a hinge, the same for the boom to the body. The bucket, however, is molded at the end of the arm without any joints.

Robot Mode

Scavenger, in robot mode, is what I remembered him to be in the G1 series and the toy version. The transformation is, again, simple and straigthforward.

Side View

Well, the arm orientation is the different, compared to G1 version but that's nitpicking.

Back View
I must admit, the hollow back of the forearms (and most parts on other figures) are really an eyesore.. And been getting worse and worse year after year ever since the IDW Generations started.

Spot on!
The detailing is nicely done on Scavenger's chest and head with clean finishing, especially on the silver chest piece.

While other members of the Constructicons, Scavenger is one of the figures that enjoy almost full range of movement.

Scavenger comes with ball jointed head, shoulders and elbows, downward hinge on the wrists (transformation purpose), ball-jointed hips, hinge on knees and feet.

The missile launchers comes with a 5mm handle and can be used by any members of the Constructicons

Combiner Mode

Transforming to combiner mode is easiest to do from alt mode, almost like G1 Scavenger (full alt mode). The square is where the C-clip on Hook pegs in.

The tread connect to Hook and Long Haul as becomes part of Devastator body while the hand is actually the green portion of the alt mode.

Scavenger's chest piece flips down and become the core of the forearm where the missile launcher pegs on forming Devastator's arm.

5 - Bonecrusher

Alt Mode

Bonecrusher transform into a bulldozer that looks almost the same as the G1 version except for the cab part. Taking the G1 toy color scheme, Bonecrusher is all greent except for some silver and black details.

Side View

Back View
There's almost no visible robot parts can be seen, which is really good.

The bucket is attached to the body via hinge which allows it to be tilted upwards and downwards.

Robot Mode

Bonecrusher is one of the best example of how well Hasbro can design the character, as Bonecrusher is almost exactly how you remember him in the G1 cartoon.

Side View

Back View
What bothers me though unlike Scavenger, Bonecrusher's forearm attachment can be seen hanging at the back.

Gorgeous head sculpt!

Just like Scavenger, Bonecrusher is one of the figures that comes with proper articulation overall.

Bonecrusher comes with a ball-jointed head, shoulders, elbows and hips, hinge and swivel on the knees and also hinge on the feet.

I decided to equip Scavenger and Bonecrusher with the missile launchers considering they are attached to them in combiner mode.

Combiner Mode

The arm mode is basically Bonecrusher in alt mode with the forearm part flipped down. Unlike Scavenger's where it is green, Bonecrusher's is all black.

6 - Scrapper

Alt Mode

Scrapper transform into a wheel loader, the big kind that's usually used in quarry. This is actually different compared to  G1 Scrapper's alt mode but instead, more towards the same approach taken by TFC for their version of Scrapper (Structor).

Side View

Aside from the purple at the mid section and also the cab, Scrapper is all green minus the tires. Overall the alt mode is quite solid and everything pegs together nicely.

Back View
The alt mode is clean without any robot parts visible which is good enough compared to the other team members.

The bucket is attached to a 2-segments boom where each segment is connected by a hinge.

Robot Mode

Now for the disappointing part. Scrapper has a really decent robot mode, homaging to his G1 version....too much...including the lack of elbow joints...

Side View
The back kibble pegs in securely on the back and Scrapper is able to stand straight without any problem.

Back View

The head sculpt is as G1 accurate as it can be, nicely done. The design of the chest is closer to the G1 version which is quite surprising as the others aren't.

Almost perfect! Almost. It's a pity that this perfectly designed figure became one of the worst of the set just because he is missing a pair of elbows.

Scrapper comes with a ball-jointed head, double-hinge shoulders, swivel on the elbows, ball-jointed hips, hinge on the knees and ankle tilts.

Scrapper also comes with an extra joint on the waist to be used in combiner mode.

Combiner Mode

In [right] leg mode, Scrapper uses the configuration used by his G1 toy where the hands are straight instead of folded (or any other configurations, used particularly by TFC Hercules and Maketoys Giant).

What surprises me even more is how the Scrapper is attached to Long Haul in combiner mode. There are 2 pegs on the top portion and something sort of like a dado where Long Haul's leg slides in.

7 - Mixmater

Alt Mode

Another thing that made the fans furious before, the controversial choice Hasbro made for Mixmaster's alt mode.

Side View

To be honest, I never knew there is such a thing until I googled 'backward cement truck' and, voila~ Mixmaster alt mode is a perfect balance between green and purple colors, unlike the alt mode of the other team members which are mostly green.

Back View

I think the problem is the cab was not detailed properly or detailed enough for people to recognize it.

Robot Mode

Personally, Mixmaster has the weirdest and weakest robot mode compared to the others, despite the shortcomings of some of them.

I could understand if the backward cement truck alt mode was chosen to help improve the design of the robot mode but seeing this....

Back View

Aside from that, the head sculpt looks a bit weird too, the one and only in the set. The chest is based on the design of G1 Mixmaster aside from the detailing.

Even with the mixer positioning, Mixmaster is still a stable figure and with his range of articulation, he's very easy to pose.

Mixmaster comes with a ball-jointed head, hinge and swivels on the shoulders and elbows, ball jointed hips, hinge on the knees and also ankle tilt.

The extra joint that allows him to tilt to the side is a bit lower compared to Scrapper but they are at the same level in combiner mode.

Combiner Mode

Transforming to combiner mode only involves flipping up the back portion to form the feet and folding out the front part to form the connector. While the alt mode looks a bit off, I don't feel there's an issue for his combiner mode.

Same connecting pegs

Officially, the forearms are folded to the back but I preferred to do as above.

8 - Group Shots

I really like how the Constructicons look in group, both in alt mode and robot mode.

It might not be clear before but the Constructicons in alt mode is huge, as you can see compared to Generation Deluxe Arcee.

In robot mode, the Constructicons are roughly the size of normal voyager, here with Combiner Wars Motormaster. Personally, this is how big I imagined the Constructicons should be, which was why I opted for TFC version before.

9 - Devastator

Now, for the best part. Combining Devastator prove to be quite easy once all the components has been transformed properly. There are quite a few tabs to make sure everything is attached securely, especially between Long Haul and Hook.

Side View

Back View
However, the empty part on Long Haul's tray does bother me a bit, Hasbro should've make it one solid piece, just like the G1 version.

The were complaints before that Devastator look too 'plain' but I think that's the direction Hasbro went with him. Watching back Devastator's appearance in G1 cartoon, the character design doesn't involved a lot of detailing. The minimal detailing made Devastator looks like one solid robot rather a combination of 6 individuals.

The head sculpt is nicely done with a really clean finishing. Hasbro opted for visor version rather than the eyes (like Takara version). Now, let's see his detailing.

*Edit : Comparison was between Hasbro version and SDCC. Takara will have both visor and the eyes

The back piece on Scavenger is where the shoulder's articulations are. The treads are securely pegged to Hook (using the C-Clip) and also to Long Haul's hand at the side. Bonecrusher is also attached in the same manner.

The connection between Long Haul and Hook is also secured using the chest piece, holding the 2 robot together. Not only that, the chest piece also tabs into both Scavenger and Bonecrusher's tread, making Devastator's upper body one solid piece.

The crotch plates are connected to the middle part using swivels to allow hips movement. But as an alternative, Long Haul's knee joints (lower than Devastator hips) can also be used, giving wider range of movement.

The feet are really solid making Devastator a really stable figure, which is a huge deal considering that has always been a problem with Combiners.

Like I said, Devastator is better off with one solid piece of tray rather than 2 large hollow parts.

I was initially worried about the way the legs are connected but as it turns out, the connection is quite solid.

Sorry as I don't have any 3rd party combiners anymore for comparison and something wrong with the picture I took comparing Devastator and Metroplex. I can just say that Devastator is at Metroplex's elbow level.

One thing that I really like about Devastator is how great his playability is, compared to other combiners (official and non-official) I've ever played with.

Not only he is stable, Devastator has really strong joints top to bottom. I left him this way for almost half an hour (I was hungry, LOL) and he stayed the same.

There is no peg for the holding the gun so even though the hinge on the fist is tight, the gun will fall off when Devastator in certain poses.

Run Devy Run!

Devastator comes with swivel-jointed head, swivel and hinge on the shoulders and elbows, swivel on the fist, ratchet joint on the waist, [strong] ratchet joint on the hips with swivel joints below them, hinge on the knees and ankle tilt. During the entire session, nothing falls apart or fall off which really surprises me.

Prepare for extermination!

Let us go mode by mode

Alt Mode

- the alt modes are nice homage to G1 version of the team with few changes
- overall really solid and properly executed
- should've go with conventional cement mixer for Mixmaster or add more details on the cab so that it is more distinguishable
- the functioning parts are minimal in this mode (eg the crane, shovel) which I think could've been done better to add more playability. But this might just be nitpicking

Individual Robot Mode

- captured the aesthetic of G1 Constructicon almost perfectly
- setback on the joints especially Long Haul and Scrapper which to me, ruin the 2 figures
- Long Haul size might bother most but I think it's necessary for the sake of combiner mode. Also considering Long Haul was depicted to be bigger in IDW continuity, I think I can live with it
- the quality is actually not so different compared to previous IDW Generations releases but due to the large size of the figure,  some of the figures look to have lower quality

Combiner Mode

- Devastator might not be as detailed as other 3rd party releases but seems to have perfect balance between design and playability
- the combination holds up perfectly from top to bottom once you get everything pegs properly
- the sheer size is really impressive, even more so when he could be pose in a lot way, not just standing straight, thanks to the strong joints especially on the hips and waist

My verdict? Will be getting both Hasbro and Takara version...and also SDCC 2015 if I can

Generations Combiner Wars Leader Class Megatron - Pictorial Review

I was working out on the review of LG-09 Brainstorm when this arrived and the sane thing to do is to put that Brainstorm on hold and proceed with the tyrant, Generations Combiner Wars Leader Class Megatron.

Pic Credit : TFWiki

One of the greatest villain of all time, Megatron led the Decepticons force fighting for the control of Cybertron against the Autobots, an act that brought war upon the entire universe.

In Package

Hasbro surprised the fans with the announcement of Leader Class Megatron under the Generations Combiner Wars series. Most are skeptical while others ridiculed Hasbro's attempt to reboot the character for CHRUG line. Let us see, shall we?

Megatron comes in a big box with the same theme as the previous Combiner Wars releases. I just noticed that the word "Transformers" laid out vertically on the side resembles Age Of Extinction box design.

Back View
The back of the box shows Megatron in both robot and alt mode, a 15 steps transformation. From afar, you'd expect to see a long history of Megatron from the bio at the back.

Character's Bio
Nah, just in different languages.

Megatron comes with an instruction sheet, a tech spec and also one sticker sheet.

Sticker Placement

Sticker number 1 and 2 (or 3 and 4) are the insignia, both Autobot and Decepticon. For those who didn't know, Megatron switch side in the recent IDW Continuity comic book (for reason that I won't write here, lol) but I can't understand why there are also Decepticon insignia as they're already painted on the figure. No 5 and 6 are to be applied on his chest, a pattern that can be seen on IDW Megatron.

Alt Mode

A Tank??? Outrage Mode ON!
One of the biggest complaint heard during his announcement was that his alt mode. Megatron transform into a silver tank instead of a gun. For me personally, I think I can understand Hasbro's decision behind Megatron's alt mode. They tried giving Megatron a gun for his alt mode but due to legal issues, he ended up being a Nerf-like gun (Classics, 2006). So, either funny looking gun or badass tank, I preferred the latter.

The tank is really big (I'm not used to seeing big figures in CHRUG line) but he is lighter than you would expect. The alt mode locks together nicely without any loose part.

Megatron comes with 2 guns (combined into one for robot mode) and can be attached on top of the tank or few other places.

The detailing on the surface of the tank is perfectly done. Unlike most Hasbro releases, Megatron is painted silver rather than the usual gray color plastic.

The turret can be rotated 360o degree without any clearance issue it is on soft ratchet joint.

Not only he has premium finishing, Megatron also comes with WORKING rubber tread! Reminded me of Revenge of The Fallen Bludgeon. Hopefully the rubber won't break though..

Size Comparison

With Cloud Optimus Prime (Classics Optimus Prime mold)

With Combiner Wars Optimus Prime

With Masterpiece Optimus Prime (Hasbro Version)

Robot Mode

Now for the best part!

I hated him when Hasbro released his promo pictures but in hand, man, he's gorgeous! Despite unable to give Megatron his G1 alt mode, Hasbro did a really good job giving him G1 robot mode design. May I say, even better than MP-05?

There's a small kibble on Megatron's back, from the side of the tank (which can be split into two to resemble IDW Megatron. Sorry, forgot to take picture of that). Aside from that, he has a very clean design. Kudos!

Back View

Was not a fan of the head sculpt at first but now, loving it. This isn't in the picture but he has a really good red light piping.

For the most part, Megatron is silver painted with few others painted black. There are red highlight that can be found on his elbows, shoulders and few places on his body

The paint app on his leg almost resemble G1 Megatron where the shins are mostly silver/gray while the outer sides are black.

There are a few minicon ports can be found on him, mostly to be used by his variant, Armada Megatron.

One design issue that is kind of disappointing at first is that the cannon is not attached to side but on the front, rendering the right elbow useless.

Luckily it can be folded halfway, freeing his elbow while not looking weird. Case closed! The cannon is on a swivel and can be rotated but I'm not sure whether or not it can be detached.

Menacing? Intimidating? Absolutely!

Megatron comes with a ball-jointed head (wide range), ratchet joint on the elbows, wrist swivels, waist swivels (limited unless you push the tank tread on his back upwards, giving clearance. The hips are on universal joints with swivels just below them. The knees are on ratchet joint and there's small, almost none, ankle tilts.

The thing that worried me before was the design of the shoulders which looks a bit limited at first. But they actually are kind of triple-jointed where the parts attached to the body can swing back and forth, the middle is on ratchet joint while the attachment to the arms are on hinges.

Forgot about his small gun....

Comparison

Combiner Wars Optimus Prime can be considered a big voyager and personally, the size of these two really works as I always prefer the bad guy to be bigger. But the biggest question about Leader Class Megatron was when Takara posted a picture comparing him (Takara Version) with MP-10 Convoy.

Sadly, Megatron is actually half-a-head shorter than MP-10, destroying fans' dream of making him a filler, temporary replacement until the release of MP Megatron Version 2. For me, it's not just the height. Megatron's slim design doesn't really fit with MP-10's bulkiness and also the overall aesthetic don't really scream 'Masterpiece' to me (despite the big G1 homage).

Personally, I think Takara's move was just so that people went on and buy Leader Megatron first before they realize there's actually a real MP Megatron Version 2 coming. (Note : PURE SPECULATION)

All he did was reminded us how we longed for a new MP Megatron

Such Heroic Nonsense!!

Generations Combiner Wars Leader Class Armada Megatron - Pictorial Review

Comes together with Generations Combiner Wars Megatron is an unexpected pair (well...not if you saw the news back then), a repaint of Megatron, Armada Megatron!

Pic Credit : TFWiki

Armada Megatron is the main antagonist in the cartoon series Armada, the first installment of "Unicron Trilogy", before Energon and Cybertron. In the continuity, the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons escalated resulting both enhancing their power with the small race of Transformers called Mini-Cons. Believing that they made the conflict worse, the Mini-Cons seek help from the Autobots to escape Cybertron. The attempt almost fail due to an ambush by the Megatron and the Decepticons resulting the Mini-Cons, in their damage starship warped and crash-landed on earth.

*Please take note that I won't be going into details for this review as it's a variant of Leader Class Megatron previously reviewed.

The fourth CHRUG Leader Class figure after Jetfire (Hasbro and Takara) and Megatron, Armada Megatron comes in the same Combiner Wars box as Megartron.

The small artwork at the front are based on the toy rather than the original version of Armada Megatron.

Back View

Character's Bio

Armada Megatron comes with the same accessories as Megatron except that he lacks the sticker sheet.

Tech Spec

Alt Mode

Armada Megatron transform into a tank, just like Megatron. Although, the alt mode made more sense for him compared to Megatron as it was his original alt mode in the Armada cartoon (albeit the tank was different).

The tank is mostly green and purple with dark gray highlights on both sides and the turret.

Despite using the same mold, the color scheme made Armada Megatron looks better than Megatron, with nice attention to the detail on the surface.

Comparison

With Leader Class Megatron

Just a recap, this is not the first Neo-Armada figure released by HasTak. No, not even Generations Armada Starscream (which I couldn't find anywhere due to all my stuff in boxes). The first was back in 2008, Universe 2.0 [Armada] Hot Shot.

I must say, these scale does look nice together in terms of the scale.

Jolt, the Mini-Con that came with Hot Shot can be attached on Armada Megatron via the Mini-Con ports.

Robot Mode

I was a bit skeptical when Hasbro made the announcement as repainting a G1-style Megatron into Armada Megatron is something that would never crossed my mind. However, in hand, he does look okay, really like the homage to the original design (the tank treads, head)

Back View

Side View
Having the tank treads separated to the side, he looks almost kibble free, compared to Megatron. Hasbro did a good job design the part as such, giving different look and feel to both characters.

Unlike Megatron's head, Armada Megatron has smaller head with insect-like horns homaging to Armada Megatron but smaller in size.

Poseability-wise, he's the same as Megatron. The treads that are pushed higher gave clearance to his waist allowing 360o rotation.

Armada Megatron comes with a ball-jointed head (wide range), ratchet joint on the elbows, wrist and waist swivels. The hips are on universal joints with swivels just below them. The knees are on ratchet joint and there's small, almost none, ankle tilts.

Comparison

The only retool part between these two figures are the head while the others are the same. However, with the alternate configuration and different paint apps, both figures are 'unique' enough to pass as separate characters.

If memory serves me right, Generations Armada Starscream is the same height as Universe 2.0 Hot Shot or at least, roughly the same.

Let us go further back

Here's Armada Megatron, side by side with his ultimate weapon, Tidal Wave. Although, this is the Energon version as I couldn't find the Armada version in short time.

Master....

Not a good day..
Personally, I think Tidal Wave looks great standing side by side with Armada Megatron, it would've been better if I had used Armada Tidal Wave whose color scheme matched him. Considering he's a repaint, there's not much that could be shown to get your attention...except maybe this!

The original Armada Megatron can combined with Tidal Wave with the aircraft carrier and battleship clipped onto his arms while the troop transport clipped on his back. While this isn't an official configuration, with the existence of the Mini-Con ports and 5mm peg holes, the new Armada Megatron can at least mimic the configuration.

The problem however is the troop transport. Coincidentally, the 2 Mini-Con ports on his back matched the screw holes on the troop transport....almost, by few millimeters. What I did was I pushed the treads closed together the ports matched the screw holes. As of now, I haven't seen any affect on the figure yet but do at your own risk.

The add ons are very heavy and Armada Megatron have problem even standing straight due to the quality/build of the legs.

Will there be any more Armada figures to be released? Sure hope Hasbro redo Armada Optimus Prime, with better super mode.

TFC Verti-Aid [Project Prometheus] - Pictorial Review

$

A figure that I've been looking forward to, but mostly because he's the last component of TFC Prometheus. To be frank, when TFC revealed their version of First Aid and Blades months back, only Red Cross (First Aid) really caught my attention while Verti-Aid seemed a bit underwhelming. So, we'll find out whether my first thought of him justified.

Pic Credit : Web

In IDW Generation 1 Continuity, Blade was part of Autobot security force, on duty in the city of Kaon. The force was given task of hunting down the renegade operators of the gladiatorial contests held in the slum areas of Cybertron, which they succeeded. Among the captives, the soon-to-be-known-as Megatron.

Pic Credit : Web

Blade's G1 toy transform into a rescue helicopter that really looks like a Bell UH-1V Iroquois. Despite being a Scramble City-style combiner limb, Blade normally form Defensor's right arm.

Previous TFC Not-Protectobots' reviews can be found below

In Package

The last release of TFC that will be using this design. Personally, I like that every TFC combiners has their own theme but keeping the overall look and feel of the packaging.

Unlike other members of Prometheus, I don't really like the artwork of Verti-Aid as I don't really feel the connection between him and Blade.

Back View

As usual, Verti-Aid comes with a tech spec, an instruction sheet and in addition to that, poster of Prometheus (just like how they did for Hercules, Uranos and Ares).

Mini Poster

Instrucion Sheet

Other than the rotor, Verti-Aid comes with Prometheus's right hand, 2 guns and a connector that also work as gattling gun.

It surprises me that aside from all of those, Verti-Aid alsom comes with a silicone pad, to be applied under all of TFC combiner's feet, to add friction and help them stand better. This is a nice addition for those who's to lazy to fix that issue themselves (like me).

Alt Mode

Verti-Aid transform into a rescue helicopter just like his G1 iteration. But this time, the helicopter really resembles Sikorsky S-61 helicopter (see below) that's also used for rescue mission.

Pic Credit : Web

Side View
Unlike the real Sikorsky S-61, Verti-Aid's alt mode is a bit short and 'compact'. Maybe it's not the same helicopter but rather a different type?

His detailing is a bit minimal, aside from the white and blue color scheme, there's only a blue line on each side and also translucent blue windows and highlights.

Transformation to alt mode is quite simple and a bit repetitive on how the arms fold, almost the same as TFC Warning Line and Red Cross. Unlike Red Cross, however, Verti-Aid transformation doesn't require aligning too many panels.

The weapons that comes with Verti-Aid can be attached to the side (just like G1 version but black color rather than white) and also below him.

Comparison

Size wise, Verti-Aid is bigger than Cloud Shockwave (Generation Whirl's mold), surprising considering Verti-Aid looked small during previous promo pictures.

Protectobot Assemble!

One of the best things about collecting combiners is when you first put them together once they're complete. Aside from Warning Line, all four of them fit in really well with each other.

Protectobot...Destroy?

Robot Mode

The last of TFC Not-Protectobots! The robot mode is not the best iteration of Blade, I must admit. Unlike the artwork, the toy looks a bit bulky, much like TFC Red Cross. The figure itself feels solid, just like all Prometheus's team members.

Side View
Sadly, just like Red Cross, Verti-Aid comes with a pretty big kibble on his back.

Back View

TFC is no stranger to small moving panels, the same as on Verti-Aid. The 2 portion that bothers me a lot are the ones below

The tail splits open and pegged to the side of the legs. However, the horizontal stabilizers just hang there loosely.

The other is the 2 red panels on his back. The panels are used to cover the gap between the middle section of the helicopter and the front part.

The head sculpt does have some Blade's characteristic but that's about it. However, it's a relieve that he doesn't come with blue face.

Despite the back kibble, Verti-Aid is still a stable figure, partly due to the size of his feet.

All of Verti-Aid's weapons can be attached to him including the connector/gattling gun and the rotor. However, I personally prefer the rotor to be attached on his back rather than on his forearm.

Despite how he look, Verti-Aid's articulations are quite good.

He comes with a head swivel, ratchet joint on the elbows, waist swivel, universal joint on the hips, ratchet joints on the knees and ball-jointed feet.

The best part of his design (or worst, depend on how you perceived it) is his shoulder joints. The multiple moving parts allows very wide range of motions and can be hidden perfectly in normal stand.

In addition to the guns, the blades can be detached from the rotor to be used as [short] swords.

Group Shots

It surprises me to see that Verti-Aid is even taller than Warning Line. Based on his propotion when his pictures were released, I would've guess that Verti-Aid will be among the shortest.

Combiner Mode

Since Prometheus's limb comes with scramble-city ability, Verti-Aid can also formed Prometheus's leg in addition to as the arm.

Transformation to leg mode is quite simple from the alt mode, by just splitting the tail and flipping the front part.

Side View

Comparison with Gumball
Much like Red Cross, I don't really prefer Verti-Aid as the leg due to the size and square design of it.

As Prometheus's hand however, Verti-Aid looks nice. Basically, despite Prometheus's scramble-city ability, the original configuration the best in terms of the combined mode overall proportion.

Coming up next, Prometheus's himself!

*Just noticed that the setup of my camera went haywire, sorry for the quality of the pictures*

It has been almost a year since Gumball was released, and now; Project Prometheus is reaching it's end. For those who missed, below are the reviews of the 5 members of Prometheus chronologically.

    Pic Credit: TFWiki

Defensor's existence revolves around the safety of others, specifically to safeguard human life. Yet, in return it becomes his weakness, taken advantage of by his rival, Bruticus and the Decepticons.

    G1 Defensor
    Pic Credit : TFWiki

    Group Shots

To recap, the journey so far;-

    Weapon

TFC Not-Protectobots come with a lot of weapons;- at least a pair of gun each, except for Hydrant. However, aside from the two pairs that are attached to Prometheus's feet, I couldn't find any way to combine the weapons nor did any instruction mentioning that. So, this is just for fun, combining the guns of all five members. How I missed the way Hercules's gun were formed.

    Alternate Configuration

Before proceeding, here's an example of using Verti-Aid as the leg, replacing Warning Line.

Despite the ability, I think the alternate configuration of Prometheus looked really weird... not my cup of tea. Given the shape of Hydrant in combiner mode, the last thing I want are blocky legs.

    Let us move on....

    Prometheus Alive!

Prometheus was the most controversial combiner ever released by TFC. Unlike previous offering, TFC opted for G1 design almost to the letter in terms of his proportion....but not in a good way.

Fully combined, I'm relieved that Prometheus doesn't share the same quality issue as Ares, his predecessor.

Prometheus's design is quite clean, aside from the ladder attached to his back. Prometheus can stand without any difficulty unlike what fans experienced with Ares. And no, I haven't used the silicon pad included with Verti-Aid.

The head sculpt is not fans' favorite, as I saw people's complaints on the board. However, I was told by Ben that the blue part can be taken off by unscrewing the head. To me, I prefer him as such with the blue part gives Prometheus a seamless head design to the body.

Despite looking the same, the hands are not recycled from any previous releases.

Any gun that comes with the limbs can be attached to the side of the feet, not only limited to Gumball and Warning Line's guns. They serve as a stopper to keep the legs from sliding to the side as well as restricting the angle of the tilt.

Prometheus is what I hoped Ares should be. Overall, the combiner is solid and everything pegs in nicely, without any small parts bumping into you as you're posing him.

The hip has improved and able to withstand the weight of Prometheus even during different poses. However, using ratchet joint for the feet, personally, is not a good idea. I wished they'd used the ball joint system (just like MMC Feral Rex) but only time will tell how long the friction on the ball joint will last.

Prometheus comes with good articulation for a combiner. The head is on a ball joint, while the shoulders and elbows are on ratchet joints and hinges. He also has wrist swivels, ratchet joints on the waist, universal joint on the hips, ratchet joint on the knees and feet.

My weapon configuration is not really good so if anyone has better way of doing it, kindly let me know.

    Comparison

Prometheus is the same height as Uranos, nicely scaled. These two are the exact opposite of each other in terms of build; Prometheus is bulky and large while Uranos is tall and slim, fitting each combiner's nature.

    Defend the Autobot City!

Design wise, he was the first that I had doubt with, after the news of Hydrant. However, I'm still glad that I follow through as I personally like Prometheus. Yet, even that the quality gets better, it is still not on-par with other combiners.

I hope TFC's direction with their Masterpiece series is not an indicator of them quitting the combiner line. I would love to see the remaining 4 (or 5, depends on how you counted them) combiners to be produced by TFC.

Generations Legends LG-09 Brainstorm - Pictorial Review

For most fans, 3rd Party releases are always better than HasTak. That, to me is not the case. But, there are some releases that most fans will agree that HasTak did better jobs. One of it would be Generation Springer. Now, for another one, Brainstorm.

For G1 Brainstorm back story and also review of Toyworld's take on the character, please click here and here. This figure however, are of a more darker Brainstorm, the IDW version.

    IDW Brainstorm
    Pic Credit : Web

    In Package

Brainstorm's box design follows the same design as the previous Generations Legends releases. The box is quite big as you can see the extra spaces inside.

The artwork follow the design of IDW Brainstorm but with less detailing.

    Back View

Brainstorm doesn't come with a tech spec (per se) but the instruction sheet is folded into some sort of booklet with the picture of Brainstorm on the front and tech spec on the back.

Also, inside the booklet, there is a 2-pages comic book which I don't really understand what it's about. However, I found out something interesting..

A column showing Brainstorm firing at Scorponok. This doesn't mean anything to me if I didn't heard the rumor about Titan Class Scorponok.

    Headmaster

I can't find any mention of the name on the box so I'm going to assume they didn't change it...

For those who had experienced with Toyworld and Perfect Effect's headmasters, HasTak version of Arcana might be a bit underwhelming, especially the arms. The best however is the head as it is on ball joint which allow quite a wide range of movement. The shoulders are on limited-range ball joints, the hips can only move forward and no knee joints (opposite direction doesn't count)

    Side View
For those who wonder why are the hands designed as such, they gave Brainstorm's head a nicer and more streamlined shape rather than just a cube, like the G1 version, and also 3rd party Headmaster releases.

Just like Toyworld version, Brainstorm's face on Arcana's back can't be hidden at all.

    Comparison

Right : Takara, Left : Hasbro

The only difference between Hasbro and Takara version of Arcana is the brown used by Takara is a bit darker than the Hasbro version, on Arcana's face and Brainstorm's mouthplate.

     Alt Mode

HasTak opted for  a modernize version of Brainstorm in alt mode, rather than a straight copy of G1 Brainstorm, much like Fansproject's Smart Robin.

I personally don't mind the simplistic approach HasTak took on him as the alt mode does look good, aside from the back portion. Considering how near-perfect it is, it's a shame that such simple problem exist ruining the whole aesthetic.

The design would be perfect if the back portion can be folded upwards at least.

Despite my minor complaint, I really like Brainstorm design in alt mode, a nice homage to the character.

    Comparison

    Left Takara, Right Hasbro

Some people contemplated whether they should take to the Takara version or Hasbro. As you can see, there're few significant differences between these two version. The cockpit on Takara is translucent orange, following G1 Brainstorm. Takara version also has more detailing where the red stripes can be seen on the wings and the front part of the alt mode. Comparing this two, the Hasbro version feels a little bit 'incomplete'.

Just like the G1 version, the cockpit can be opened and the headmaster can be put inside as the pilot.

    Dog fight

    Robot Mode

Arcana, standing in front of Brainstorm

The mechanism of the headmaster is a bit faulty and fans are advised to be cautious when pulling out the headmaster. What you should do is pull the gray plastic above the cockpit downward and tilt the head forward while pulling it.

    Head on!
While this gimmick is not exactly the same as the G1 version, there's a panel that folds down when you attached the head (not functioning really well) revealing his tech specs bar graph for his Speed (SPD), Strength (STR) and Intelligence (INT).

I must say, I have no regret selling my Toyworld Brainwave when the Hasbro revealed Brainstorm. Heck, I would sell FP Smart Robin if I had him too.

Despite the simplistic approach, Brainstorm is a really good figure, designed for practicality.

    Side View
The figure is kibble-free, aside from the front part of the jet, folded to his back.

The head sculpt is nicely done and without debate, people would know he's Brainstorm. The way Arcana's arms are design allow the head to be more streamline rather than just plain and square.

Not only the aesthetic, Brainstorm also have decent posebility despite lacking few point of articulations.

Brainstorm comes with a ball-jointed head, swivel and hinge on his shoulders, double ratchet joints on his elbows, universal joint on the hips, swivel on the thighs, ratchet joints on the knees and [small degree] ankle tilt.

He lacks 2 crucial joints, the first being a waist swivel and then hands swivel.

However, that doesn't stop him from being posed in b****s ways.

    Comparison

It is obvious that the Hasbro version looks a bit dull and plain compared to the Takara version due to the color of the cockpit, the missing red stripes and also the shade of red used on his chest.

    The awesome twin!

This mold is one of the best to be released in 2014, making me remembered why I love official releases. Now, the bigger question, will the rest of the team be released? I sure hope so. I've been thinking a lot recently and I come to the conclusion that I won't stop collecting in the near future. Not 1 year, not 2 years, hopefully not even 10 years. So, rather than running around chasing 3rd party releases all the time just so that "I have him on my shelf", I'll try and wait patiently for the official figure to be released. Unless if the 3rd party release is tooo damn awesome! LOL

The story began with multiple universes existing as product of the mysterious omnipotent being, the Creator. Realizing that all the universes needed order, the Creator selected a universe called "Cloud World" and dispatched an emissary, SARA to guide the inhabitants keeping the peace across the multiverse.

    Guardians of Time

As part of the task, SARA can open dimensional gates allowing the Transformers to travel all across the multiverse and asking in return, for them to gather surplus energy from various sources in different universes. Cloud World Autobots are seen to travel in various other continuity for that purpose, like 33rd HM Spacetime (which refers to the 33rd episode of The Headmasters, Duel on the Asterois) and 24th BW Spacetime (refers to 24th episode of Beast Wars) where both episode involves significant energy surges.

As of now, I've owned 4 Cloud releases which are TFC-A01 (Optimus Prime), TFC-D02 (Starscream), TFC-A03 (Hot Rodimus) and TFC-D03 (Shockwave) as only these 4 out of 6 uses original CHRUG mold, plus the upcoming TFC-A04 (Roadbuster) and TFC-D04 (Hellwarp).

Hot Rod was first introduced in The Transformers : The Movie (1986) as a young Autobot stationed in Autobot City. He was the first to suspect something is wrong after Daniel pointed out a hole on the Autobot Ship while they're fishing (yes, fishing). He was present during Optimus Prime's dying moment after bravely fighting Megatron (many would argue Hot Rod's interference in the fight was the cause of Optimus Prime's death but I personally think Megatron would've done the same with him being close to the gun) and caught the Matrix when it was being passed to Ultra Magnus (which many would also argue that it's the reason why Magnus can't open it during an attack afterwards. To me, it's been decided by the Matrix beforehand)

What do you mean it doesn't "make any sense"?
    Pic Credit : Web

During the battle against Galvatron inside of Unicron, Hot Rod was overpowered by the new leader of the Decepticons before he manage to tap into the power of the Matrix with the most epic soundtrack playing at the background.

    Arise, Rodimus Prime!

    In Package

Transformers Cloud series comes with a box with character artwork on the front, in this case Hot Rodimus. The artwork combines with its pair with the Autobot character facing towards the right and the Decepticon (in this case, Shockwave) facing towards the left.

As I explained above, Rodimus comes with a comic book with him, with SARA and Shockwave on the front cover.

Cloud figures come in a simple packaging with the inner box slide out from the side of the outer box.

    Helicopter Mode

Cloud Hot Rodimus, being a repaint of Generations Springer, is a triple-changer that transform into robot, helicopter and armored car. And there was ruckus everywhere!

The helicopter mode looks fine but due to it being a triple-changer, the color placement of Rodimus in helicopter mode is the least good looking to me. But still, the front portion of the helicopter looks nice and not at all messy. The color of the rotor and the blaster does look out of place but I'm not sure will it be better if those two are colored red or maybe orange.

    Comparison

Cloud Rodimus with Takara Generations Sandstorm and Springer (sorry I'm not sure where I put my Hasbro Generations Sandstorm and Springer) making him the 5th variant of the mold.

    With Cloud Shockwave

    Vehichle Mode

The second alt mode for Hot Rodimus is an armored car. Between the two alt modes, it seems that the paint scheme is more focused on this alt mode rather than the helicopter mode.

    Side View

    Back View

The paint application is really nicely done with very clean finishing even on the 2 flaps (above the front tires, a problem for Generations Springer variant) and the painted clear plastic for the roof. The flame deco is not really accurate to G1 Hot Rod/Rodimus though but good enough for people to recognize the character he represent.

    Comparison

For those who'll be using Hot Rodimus for their CHRUG Rodimus Prime, here's a comparison between him and Classics (2006) Rodimus (Hot Rod).

However, the best version to be used with Cloud Hot Rodimus is the 2012 UN-23 United Rodimus Prime (again, sorry as I'm not sure where I keep him) due the color of the wings.

    Pic Credit : Web

    Robot Mode

Before we start on the robot mode, it's worth mentioning that NONE of the Cloud releases received any retool whatsoever, just a straight repaint. One might point out that Brawn has a new head but that actually was made for the cancelled GDO Brawn.

Honestly, I'm not sure what's the problem cause I really like this variant. To be honest, being a mold collector, most of the time I will just open my new mold variant to check and they will go straight back in box (just like I did yesterday with 2014 Million Publishing Exclusive Shouki).

    Side View

But him, I've been transforming him back and forth for few times when I got him.

    Back View

The mold itself was very good to begin with (I sold off my Warbot Defender right away after looking at Generations Springer image for the first time) and with this deco, it makes him look even better.

The crest on the head might not be very G1-ish but in IDW continuity, Hot Rod/Rodimus iterations already adopted this design (also previously, Energon Rodimus). The paint app is nicely done with quite a lot of detailing on him, even more than Springer and Sandstorm.

    Comparison

Would've been better if side-by-side United Rodimus

With Cloud World Autobots Leader, Cloud Optimus Prime

Just like Springer and Sandstorm, Rodimus has a very good range of movement, making him a lot of fun to play with.

Rodimus comes with ball-jointed head, hinge and swivel on the shoulders, ratchet joint on the elbows, waist swivel, universal joint on the hips and ratchet joint on the knees and swivel above them.

The rotors convert into a sword much like Generations Springer's.

The design and posebility of the figure seems fitting with the newer aesthetic of Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime (after G1 iteration) as he is portray to be an agile and skillful fighter but also capable leader (eg Energon Rodimus Prime and Animated Rodimus Minor).

    Let's do this, Prime!

A lot of people said the using Generations Springer mold as Rodimus and making him a triple-changer is blasphemous. So, let's examined a few facts

1 - It's unclear that Hot Rodimus is basically Hot Rod or a Prime as after G1 continuity, the name had been used loosely for the character. The name Rodimus had been used by during Energon while the name Rodimus Prime had been used in Animated series (though the toy uses Rodimus Minor) with both of the characters are in a way a leader/commander of the Autobots but not a Prime so not transforming into a futuristic truck is acceptable.

2 - If he is indeed Rodimus Prime, the character almost never transform into a futuristic truck again after the G1 continuity (and also Titanium Series and Masterpiece but both are takes on G1 Rodimus Prime character) so tying the him to that alt mode not rational.

3 - Most characters introduced in CHRUG will at least have minor changes but enough homage to the original characters. These figures had their alt mode's characteristic changed and for some, totally different alt mode like RTS Perceptor (and e-Hobby Magnificus), United Frenzy/Rumble (and TFCC Eject/Rewind), the Junkions, Fansproject City Commander and few others.

4 - Cloud is a small line/series that I think the details will never merge with the main continuity so the fact that he's a triple-changer will stay here. But there's a lot of G1 characters' aesthetic that had been changed since G1 but accepted in the main storyline like IDW Magnus with Minimus Ambus or Unicron is no longer a creation of Primacron but is The Chaos Bringer, twin brother of Primus

If Cloud Hot Rodimus  is actually Hot Rod, it's not weird for him to have a 3rd mode, character change. But let's say he's actually a Prime. Orion Pax with the Matrix transform into a big truck with trailer, Hot Rod with the Matrix acquire 3rd alt mode. Good enough for me, Cloud Hot Rodimus will be my version of Rodimus Prime, not Fansproject Protector anymore (until Hasbro come up with better figure)

Generations Combiner Wars Stunticons- Pictorial Review

    0
Sorry for being late doing this review, these 3 months had been extremely busy with work. Not only that I'm currently in the middle of moving to a new house.

For the Combiner Wars releases, I'll be doing 2 parts of review for each team, the first as individuals and the second will be on the combined mode. Basically, this review will only focus on the team members of Decepticon's Stunticons.

    Pic Credit : TFWiki

The Stunticons were Megatron way of breaking Autobots' dominion over the road/land, created from various stolen human vehicles and customized. The Stunticons were given life by Vector Sigma with Megatron special request, 'to fill them with hatred for the Autobots and everything they stand for'. But before they were granted life, Megatron brought them for a 'test drive' via remote control, forcing them to do all kind of 'stunts' from summersault, flip to bashing through forests. They are the arch enemy of the Aerialbots.

    G1 Stunticons
    Pic Credit : TFWiki

In this review, I'll do them part by part, starting with in-package image of all the members, then alt mode and finally robot mode. The combiner mode and the combiner itself, will be done in the next review.

    1 - Breakdown

The Wave 2 deluxes are packed in different way compared to the first wave, with the inclusion of Hasbro Exclusive Cover IDW comic book, much like the previous Generations (IDW Generations, 2013/2014)

    Back View

Even better, unlike the IDW Generations, Breakdown's packaging is collector-style packaging, like those used by Neca (if not mistaken). To take out the toy, you can just remove the tapes on the back without cutting anything (reminded me of Henkei's packaging)

    Comic Book
    Front Cover

I haven't been reading the IDW comic book recently but if I'm not mistaken, the comic book that comes with Breakdown is IDW The Transformers : Robot In Disguise #13, The Verge.

The Transformers : Robot In Disguise #16, Heavy Is The Head

    3 - Dragstrip

Dragstip is a little bit different than the rest of the Deluxes. He was released in the first wave of Combiner Wars, together with 4 out of 5 Aerialbots, and comes in normal packaging WITHOUT the comic book.

    Back View

However, unlike the 2nd Wave Deluxes, Dragstrip comes with a collector card, just like Combiner Wars Voyagers and the rest of 1st Wave releases. If I'm not mistaken, the 1st Wave of Combiner Wars will be re-released and comes with the comic books.

    4 - Offroad

Offroad is a new character that joined the Stunticons as replament for Wildrider, much like Aerialbot Alpha Brave for Slingshot.

The image at the back of the packaging shows Offroad painted black and red as opposed to the final product, grey and red.

The Transformers : Robot In Disguise #14, Before The Dawn

    5 - Motormaster

The first repaint from the Combiner Wars toyline, Motormaster, the main body of Menasor.

    Character's Bio

    Alt Mode

    1 - Breakdown

Breakdown transform into a car that looks a lot like Lamborghini Gallardo as opposed to his G1 iteration, a Lamborghini Countach. The off-white paint job is a homage to the original G1 toy so I'm not sure whether the Takara version will be the same or their trademark, pure white (see United Jazz and Drift).

The detailing is quite nice the rims are all painted, something you rarely see on Hasbro deluxe releases.

However, there are no detailing at the back of the car aside from the blue strip.

    Clean Paint App
Breakdown's paint app really follow his G1 counterpart aside from the '15RACING'on the windscreen.

For those who didn't know, each of the Deluxe combiner team members comes with a weapon that convert into both the foot and the hand of the combiner. The weapon can be attached on top of the car, homaging G1 Breakdown.

The not-so-good part is Breakdown also comes with a Blaster/Sword that looks pretty off attached to the car.

    2 - Dead End

Dead End's alt mode resembles a Ferrari 458 Italia as opposed to his G1 version which is based on Porsche 928.

The paint app on Dead End is my favorite of all the Stunticons. The glossy maroon and the detailing are nicely done, a lot better than average Hasbro releases.

Generation Dead End still retain the dark orange strip from the hood to the back of the car, much like the G1 version.

Not sure how much more random things can get when the other weapon Dead End comes with is a smoke stack...

    3 - Dragstrip

To be honest, I didn't care about Dragstrip when I first got him with the 4 Aerialbots. This is actually the first time that I really play with him.

There are 2 striking differences between him and his G1 version. The first would be G1 Dragstrip is all yellow. The more obvious would be Generation Dragstrip only has 4 wheels instead of 6. Maybe next time, Draggy.

The paint app is quite minimal on Dragstrip and the finishing is quite clean.

The peg on Dragstrip's sword is weirdly angled resulting the above picture.

    4 - Offroad

Offroad transform into a 4x4 pickup truck, a weird choice for a member of the Stunticons. The shades of grey is lighter compared to G1 Wildrider but I think it's close enough.

Unlike Alpha Bravo, Off Road is not from the IDW comic book continuity but rather from the game, Transformers Legend.

In general the alt mode looks nice aside from the back where the robot's feet are CLEARLY visible.

    5 - Motormaster

Heard a lot of people saying that Motormaster looks a lot like Age Of Extinction Galvatron. Well, I kinda agree with that. Motormaster is a repaint of Combiner Wars Optimus Prime that was released in the first wave.

The fact that Motormaster doesn't come with a trailer is not something that surprises me. However, the color scheme is really different from G1 Motormaster as the truck cab is supposed to be black, not gray (gray is the color of the trailer).

The paint app on him is quite minimal and the purple used is a bit too light making it hard to differentiate from the gray base. Also, the rims are unpainted...

The alt mode looks okay in general aside from Menasor's crotch plate which can be seen at the back

    Weapon Storage

It was not obvious before but there are quite a few differences between Motormaster and Optimus Prime. A lot of parts were retooled like the front grill and the bumper, among others.

    Group Shots

Can't believe that I would ever see official Stunticons, not just random repaint of other figures.

    Robot Mode

    1 - Breakdown

Let us start with my least favorite figure, Breakdown. Yup, it's quite surprising since Breakdown is supposed to be the more famous of all the Stunticons, having quite a lot of figures repainted into the character.

    Side View

    Back View

I don't really mind the back kibble but the short and boxy design really bothers me. One might say it's a homage to the G1 version but seeing that the rest are not like that, I can't really accept it.

The headsculpt is nice and clean but without light piping.

Despite the boxy design, Breakdown still have decent articulations.

Breakdown comes with ball jointed head (limited) and shoulders, soft ratchet on the elbows, waist swivel, ball jointed hips, hinges on the knees and feet.

The joints are fairly tight, making it quite easy to pose him.

Hasbro did good designing the combiner's hand/foot where it can also convert into blaster but whenever a figure uses it, it still look like a hand to me.

    2 - Deadend

Dead End is my favorite Generation Stunticons! The detailing on the figure is nicely done especially in the chest area.

    Side View

    Back View

Despite the nice headsculpt, I am still not sure whether it is based on any version of Dead End or an updated design based on the G1 cartoon series.

The head is on a swivel joint, the shoulders are on ball joints and the elbows are on hinges. He also comes with waist swivel, ball-jointed hips and soft ratchet joints on the knees.

Despite having a nice design, Dead End has the worst QC of all the Stunticons. The hips are quite loose and the flaps on the lower legs doesn't peg in properly.

I still don't understand why he is equipped with a smokestack...

    3 - Dragstrip

Dragstrip is quite a decent figure, not the best of the bunch nor is he the worst. Despite how slim he is, he is quite heavy compared to the rest.

The paint scheme might not be homage to G1 Dragstrip but I really like it, as opposed to being all yellow.

    Side View

    Back View

I'm also not sure what Dragstrip's head sculpt was based on but the general paint apps is based on G1 Dragstrip especially the blue face and the red visor.

He is a lot of fun to play with, I give you that. The figure comes with ball jointed head and shoulders, ratchet joints on the elbows, waist swivel, ball jointed hips and hinges on the knees.

At least his melee weapon make sense

    4 - Offroad

Unexpectedly, my favorite Stunticon. Aside from the gray and red that can be seen in alt mode, some parts are cyan, contrasting the overall color scheme.

    Side View

    Back View

I'm not really sure why but I really love the head sculpt which holds a lot of resemblance with Ruckus, a G1 Triggercon. And that's who he was supposed to be. Rumor has it that the reasons why he is a new character (and not Ruckus) are due to name unavailability and also Ruckus doesn't make sense as a Stunticon.

The combination of his paint scheme and the head sculpt gives him a sinister look, a personality that I think would make him the 'Swindle' of Stunticons.

Off Road is quite poseable except for the back kibble bumping into the panels on his shoulders. Off Road comes with a ball-jointed head and shoulders, hinges on the elbows, waist swivel and hinges on the knees.

Overall, he has tight joints, unlike Dead End. However, even if he doesn't, ball joints are quite easy to fix so no biggy.

    5 - Motormaster

Last but not least, Motormaster! Despite being the second variant for the mold, I think Motormaster is the one the mold was designed for and Optimus Prime is the variant.

    Side View

    Back View

The head sculpt is nice and the finishing is quite clean. I'm not sure why but the color changed when I took this picture.

Side-by-side with Optimus Prime made me feel that Motormaster is the first variant after all as the aesthetic fits him more than it does Optimus.

Despite the blocky design, Motormaster is a fun toy to play with with wide range of articulations.

He comes with a ball-jointed head, double-jointed shoulders, ratchet joints on the elbows, waist swivels, ratcheting universal joints on the hips and soft ratchets on the knees.

The joints are quite tight and the figure is quite stable despite his size.

Motormaster comes with a blaster and a sword that can be combined to form Menasor's sword.

    Group Shots

It's time we take over the road

A lot of people complain about Hasbro Stunticons so let us take it one step at a time. For now, let us put the combiner mode aside and see the individual bots.

I personally think Hasbro did a good job designing the Stunticons, they look and fit in the CHRUG lineup even more than Fansproject version with their size and homages. The quality is not really consistent between releases but overall I think it is acceptable. So yes, they are my CHRUG Stunticons

I'm sorry as the review took a long time to finish, am really quite busy right now. Hopefully I'll be able to finish Menasor's review in near time. Also on the list are Generation Aerialbots, Fansproject Madlaw, Unique Toys Fenrir, Xovergen God Armor and few others. Sorry for the wait

The review of Stunticons wouldn't be complete without reviewing the combiner himself, the mighty Menasor.

Decepticon's 2nd combiner after Devastator, Menasor is the name of the combined form of the Stunticons. The Stunticon's ability to match the Autobots dominance of the road is the not the end of Megatron's secret weapon. Unveiling their combined form when they were confronted by the newly created Aerialbots, Megatron predicted his genius Plan B to be smart and foreseeing the end of the Autobots, only to be matched Superion, the combined form of the Aerialbots.

    Combiner Wars Stunticons

    Combiner Parts

First, let us see Hasbro's double-edges combiner appendages, the foot/hand.

The combiner hand is nicely design by Hasbro, although without individually articulated fingers aside from the thumb. To hold the weapon, there's a 5mm port making it easier than using peg on the palm that might loosen up or overtime, stressed.

Even better, the thumb is on a hinge that can rotate to both side so that the hand can be used as both left and right.

Not only that, the hand can be changed into combiner's foot with the thumb used as a heel. Yes, clever. But we'll look into their practicality after this.

    Combiner Limbs (Alternate Configuration)

Comes with scramble-city ability, all four Menasor's limbs are interchangeable, which means each of them can transform into an arm or a leg. Let us look at the alternate configuration first.

    Dragstrip as Menasor's Leg

Dragstip in leg mode requires only small amount of transformation from alt mode. Most people tend to forget to flip the end part of his alt mode, ended up with that leg longer than the other.

From the back, there's almost no visible robot parts and aside from the chest.

The same with Dead End. 2/3 of his alt mode does not require transformation at all.

I've mentioned an issue with Dead End during previous review where the legs/back of the car doesn't peg well together. It's a huge problem in this mode but luckily, the port that connect to the foot is not half-and-half but instead full round hole which means even if the part portion of the car splits open, the foot still attach to Dead End (also true for all the limbs of Menasor and Superion).

    Back View
Just like Dragstrip, from the back, Dead End's robot parts is pretty well hidden.

Breakdown in arm mode however, not my personal favorite. Don't get me wrong, he's solid but don't really prefer Breakdown's feet folded down like that (official configuration).

Offroad as Menasor's arm is the weakest of all the alternate-configuration limbs in my opinion. The hands doesn't really peg anywhere, the feet can't be folded or hidden anywhere where they are kind of obvious.

Offroad will be repainted into Combiner Wars Protectobots First Aid in Wave 3 and from what I see, I don't think he'll be retooled anymore other than the head. So it can be expected that First Aid will have the same issues as Defensor's arm (unless you use the official configuration for Combiner Wars Defensor and First Aid becomes the leg).

    Combiner Limbs (Designated Configuration)

Many would not prefer him as replacement for Wildrider but as Menasor's leg however, Offroad is quite solid and not a bad substitute. Still, we'll see whether Takara will release Menasor with Wildrider or not.

Not sure why, despite also being solid leg, Breakdown is still my least favorite limb. But again, preference, nothing more I guess.

Dragstrip transform into a decent combiner arm, the mode is solid and well designed. For those who complaint about the visible upper legs, it's the same as most 3rd party combiners out there.

Just like before, the fact that Dead End's legs can't peg together securely is my biggest issue with him, in all modes.

    Combiner Mode (Official)

Before I proceed, just want to clarify that I won't be doing review of Blackjack, individually or as Menasor's chest plate. In fact, no other legends figure will be used, at all. Personally, I don't collect any CHRUG figures smaller than Deluxe size, not even for Minibots. I made that exception with RTS/United Wincharger before (and Wipeout) but I'm too lazy to sell them now. My version of Minibots are based on older CHRUG releases ie [Deluxe] Bumblebee, Cliffjumper, Warpath, Swerve, Wheelie and [Ultra] Powerglide.

However, for those who complaint that Menasor SHOULDN'T have separate chest plate, I think this is worth mentioning. No, he doesn't have separate chest plate..in G1 cartoon. But, his G1 toy comes with a roller car that can be used with G1 Motormaster 'base' mode. The existence of the roller car also can be seen in Marvel UK continuity (Second Generation), Dreamwave Generation One continuity (Passive Aggression) and GI Joe VS The Transformers continuity (The Art Of War). Well, the roller car shouldn't be Blackjack (based on Blackjack of the Sports Car Patrol Micromaster) but you get the idea. Moving on!

Behold, the Menasor we've been waiting for....!!..... Hasbro's combiners generally are great, I really like their Superion and the upcoming Defensor (from what I saw in the pictures) but the design of Menasor is really weak. All the limbs are well designed but main body is too bulky (making him look weird with thin arms) but at the same time, hollow making him an unstable figure. Not to mention they cheated on the upper legs as they are only 'for show', with panels folding up making him looks like he has proper legs.

    Back View
While I don't usually mind how combiners look from the back but Menasor's back reveal too much of his weak design, the upper legs 'illusion', the thin main body, the visible fists and Motormaster lower legs.

Not sure why Hasbro went for this head sculpt for Menasor as the horns are really out of place. However, the detailing is good and the finishing is nicely done.

I can't really find any place to attach the small weapons [so that they make sense] that comes with all four limbs aside from Dead End's weapon.

Not the way I prefered but Motormaster's chest can be split open revealing another chest but with excellent detailing (lacking paint though).

I can't help but notice, the detailing bear resemblance to Age Of Extinction Galvatron. Curious...

    Close-up Menasor body and hips
Another issue is that that one-piece crotch plate hinder his hips movement. It can be flipped up but not without making Menasor look weird.

    Not bad...at certain angle

    Combiner Mode (Alternate)

While being able mix-and-match the limbs is a good gimmick, I don't think it really works for Menasor as he somehow looks bulkier than the previous configuration.

    Unofficial Configuration

These are just random attempt to improve Menasor's look (from my perspective) without any modification.

Since Menasor is a bit too bulky for his height, bend Motormaster's hips at smaller angle to give him taller looks. However, by doing so, the panels can't peg anywhere.

Also, this still doens't solve my issue witht the one-piece crotch plate.

    Preferred Configuration

Although not perfect but this is my prefered configuration, with Motormaster's lower body not rotated (the same way as it is in robot mode). In this configuration, Motormaster's knees are used for Menasor's forward movement of the legs while his hips are for movement to the side. As I said, this configuration is not perfect as the Motormaster knees are too low which makes him look a bit weird. Still, it improves his articulation and the proportion.

To make it better, Motormaster's hips and knees should be tighten. However, for this review, I didn't do it. In addition, if any 3rd party companies can come up with a new chest plate that extend lower than his original crotch plate, maybe this configuration can improve more.

Mastermind Creations R-01C Terminus Hexatron Continuum - Pictorial Review

Continuing from where we left off, here's a review of another Sixchanger, by another company that's not Mastermind Creations, but the old-timer, Fansproject, with their take on G1 Quickswitch, Function XV M.A.D.L.A.W (Master V).

    Pic Credit : TFWiki

What do we know about him? Well, aside from his appearance in Marvel The Transformers comic #240 Out To Lunch! and his own commercial (where he was declared to be Sixshot's son, adamant to make up for his father's mistakes), Quickswitch was only in G1:Season 5 (which consist of  more than 10 episodes from previous seasons and The Transformers: The Movie), at the end segment of Five Faces of Darkness Part 2.

All the end segments featured stop-motion puppet of Powermaster Optimus Prime and a [real] boy, Tommy Kennedy (some information can be obtained here).

    PuppetMaster Optimus Prime
    Pic Credit : TFWiki

So, is that it? Yes, technically. It's because Quickswitch is actually the Hasbro version of Sixknight, a character that appeared in Masterforce series. Both versions was released simultaneously in 1988.

    Pic Credit : TFWiki

I will explain about Sixknight if I do a review of toy version of the character in the future (a repaint is coming, from what I heard).

    G1 Quickswitch
    Pic Credit : TFWiki

Three out of six Quickswitch's alt modes are basically the same as Sixshot which are robot mode, Cybertronic Jet, laser pistol while the rest are a drill tank (while Sixshot is a tank), a hovercraft (Sixshot's off-road vehicle) and a flying puma (Sixshot's winged wolf).

    In Package

Madlaw comes in a box with the same design as previous Function-X releases with the box colored green. However, the box is bigger than the box of his predecessors.

Accessory-wise, Madlaw is quite basic as he only comes with an instruction booklet and 2 pairs of guns with the bigger pair homaging G1 Quickswitch. Unlike MMC Hexatron, Madlaw doesn't have an initialization point and the instruction show his transformation from one mode to another in sequence, not from, let's say, robot mode to all the other 5 modes.

    Wood Runner Mode

Not something you want to hear at the very beginning but Madlaw's wood runner mode (flying puma) is really bad...

The proportion is out and downright weird while the hind legs are not articulation aside from the paws.

Not only that, the wood runner looks like he have a big butt and worse, a gap between the left and right cheek (you can attached the big guns but wouldn't help much).

Still, he may still look decent if you can find the right angle. There is now range of movement on his head and neck aside from hinge on the jaws. The front legs have sufficient range of movement with hinges on the shoulders, knees and also paws.

Hexatron's winged wolf mode is roughly the same length as Madlaw's wood runner but the former is much bulkier.

    Air Strike Mode

Even though the air-strike mode doesn't have much similarities (well....almost none), the alt mode is nice and the transformation is quite easy.

My only complaint is that the drill parts sticking out at the back is really a poor design. And the wood-runner head that splits in half, sitting on the wings is not an issue...until you notice them and can't be unseen..

    Laser Shot Mode

The laser shot mode is a lot better than the previous two, personally. Following the official configuration, the guns attached at the front seems quite underwhelming compared to the overall size of the figure.

Considering you might be holding him with your hand for this alt mode, the wood-runner head that formed the handle doesn't look too bad.

Despite being smaller, Madlaw seems to have a more plausible gun mode compared to Hexatron.

    Dirt Driller Mode

The dirt driller is a good alt mode and again, the transformation is quite easy. The overall alt mode looks a bit round-ish compared to the G1 version

Officially, the small guns are attached to the side of the dirt driller but the big guns can also be attached. Other significant different is the drill is white as opposed to red drill on G1 Quickswitch.

    Comparison with Hexatron's tank mode

    Aqua Force Mode

The aqua force mode is quite different from his G1 alt mode with the most recognizable as a boat is the bow (to me).

Overall, I don't mind the alt mode being different from G1 Quickswitch's hovercraft mode as I welcomed updated design for newer characters...

.... aside from the driller at the back.

    Robot Mode

After the multiple alt modes, here's the best part.

Madlaw comes packaged in robot mode and the transforming sequence starts from that (following the above sequence). The plastic quality is more or less the same as recent Fansproject releases (aside from their Lost Exo Realm line) with no die-cast parts.

The wings on his back is a nice homage to the original aside from the red detailing as the wings on Quickswitch are all green and smaller. Madlaw feet doesn't have heels making it hard standing him straight.

    Back View
His design is clean even at the back, it's surprising considering that he's a sixchanger.

The detailing and the sculpt of the head is nicely done and clean. However, there's something wrong with the shade of yellow used...something I can't put my finger on.

You can either have Madlaw with eyes, just like G1 Quickswitch and Sixknight toys are or push the mechanism at the back of his head so that the visor comes down, giving the same design as Sixknight in the Masterforce series.

Madlaw comes with a ball-jointed head, a hinge and swivel on the shoulders, double jointed elbows, waist swivels, hinge on the knees and ball-jointed feet. My least favorite is the fact that he uses ball joint on the hips.

His shoulders are a bit limited, a problem for any figure with tall shoulders. However, aside from that, his articulations is really good making him a figure that's fun to play with.

I personally prefer the smaller guns as they don't look out of proportion compared to the figure.

However, for those who prefer more homage to G1 Quickswitch, you can used the other set of larger guns.

I personally really like his ability to do a lot of dynamic poses, something that I wish all figures to have, especially when I'm taking their pictures.

The lack of heels does bother me a little but you can find a lot of ways to not make that into a big issue as you can almost pose him in any way you like.

Compared to Hexatron, Madlaw is just at his chest level which is good enough considering G1 Quickswitch is just at crotch level of G1 Sixshot.

I really need to stop using Fansproject's Assaulter as benchmark for their new releases. I have to admit that the quality of Fansproject releases aren't what they used to be. However, Madlaw is a sturdy and solid figure as I don't see any parts breaking in any time soon.

When I fiddled around with him, I found that all 5 alt modes felt a bit underwhelming and I was not as excited as when I first played with Mastermind Creations Hexatron.

BUT, please understand, G1 Sixshot's toy is already a great blueprint that just lack the modern days articulations and flexibility. What MMC did was improving what it lacked (while adding their own personal touch). That's not the case with Madlaw. G1 Quickswitch's robot mode had a weak design and for Fansproject to basically re-design the character from scratch is a good effort and the outcome is not a mediocre figure.

    Q-Transformers QT-02 Bumblebee and QT-08 Bumble - Pictorial Review

    0
Just for fun, I'm doing a review of a new Japan Transformers line, Q-Transformers, that was launched late 2014.

Q-Transformers is, in a way, a continuation of Choro-Q line and exhibit similar design of super-deformed characters that transform into fully licensed vehicles.

The cartoon series, Q-Transformers : Mystery of Convoy Returns was released in support of the toyline and also a mobile game under the same name.

The first wave was released on December 26th, 2014, consisting 8 characters which are
    • QT-01 Optimus Prime (Western Star 4900 SB Tractor)
    • QT-02 Bumblebee (2014 Camaro Concept)
    • QT-03 Lockdown (Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4)
    • QT-04 Crosshairs (Chevrolet Corvetter C7)
    • QT-05 Lamborghini Countach LP500S)
    • QT-06 Prowl (Nissan Fairlady Z-280Z-T)
    • QT-07 Hot Rodimus (Toyota 86)
    • QT-08 Bumble (Daihatsu Copen)

    In Package

    QT-02 Bumblebee

QT-02 Bumblebee is one of 2 Bumblebee characters released under the first wave.

    Back View

The packaging uses movie-theme design as well as characters with Transformers : 30 Years logo on the top left.

    QT-08 Bumble

Although from the same wave, the second Bumblebee, QT-08 (dubbed Bumble), is packed differently from QT-02 Bumbleebee.

    Back View

Bumble comes in G1-theme packaging with G1 Sideswipe and Prowl at the top.

Both doesn't come with any biocards or anything and the only instructions is as above.

    Alt Mode

    QT-02 Bumblebee

QT-02 Bumblebee transform is a movie-verse version of the character that transform into a super deformed 2014 Camaro Concept  car.

    Side View

    Back View
Despite the size, the detailing is quite good with painted rims and backlight, and unlike Bot Shot, nothing pops out when you hold him.

    QT-08 Bumble

I don't quite understand Bumble though. Since Bumblebee's alt mode is 2014 Camaro following the movie-verse, it's weird that Bumble transform into super deformed Daihatsu Copen.

Bumble's painthjob in alt mode is really good with great detailing from front to the back.

    Comparison

Personally, I prefer Bumble more than Bumblebee as the detailing looks better. However, the car model used for Bumble is a bad choice.

If you are wondering how small they are, this is the size comparison with Classics Bumblebee.

    Robot Mode

    QT-02 Bumblebee

Never really paid much attention to Q-Transformers before and was surprised how cute they are, haha. The transformation is REALLY simple, just like in the 'instruction'. To my disappointment, the head sculpt is poorly done, doesn't really look like movie-verse Bumblebee.

    Side View

    Back View
    QT-08 Bumble

Bumble however, comes with a better head sculpt and a good homage to his G1 character.

    Side View

    Back View

Quality of both figures are quite okay except that the ball joint on the hips are quite loose.

The sculpted cannon on Bumblebee's right arm makes him the only figure in the line (so far) that comes with a weapon.

Articulation-wise, nothing much can be expect from this lines aside from few simple poses. But, honestly, who'd expect good posebility from them? They come with swivel joint on the head, ball-jointed shoulders, swivel on the elbows, ball-jointed hips and knees.

    Comparison

    Go back to school!!!

Just to add, QT-02 was also released as exclusives, dubbed QT-02E. One version was sold in Transformers Expo, in less orange-shade of yellow while the other was in clear plastic, a Toys'R'Us Japan give-away.

Now, time for Combiner Wars. The Protectobots are released under the third wave of the line with different approach as before. Unlike the Aerialbots and Stunticons, all members of the Protectobots are all released in the same wave.

    G1 Protectobots
    Pic Credit : TFWiki

Aside from G1/G2 version (and comic books), the Protectobots (as a team) were never included in any other newer Transformers series unlike Constructicons, Aerialbots and Combaticons for instance, that made appearance (an iteration of them) in the Energon/Superlink series among others.

Some back stories of the characters and a third party version of them by TFC can be found below

    In Package

    1 - Blades

The first of five, Blades. While the packaging of the Stunticons use purple highlights at the top of the packaging, the Protectobots use cyan. He comes in the same collector-style packaging just like second wave of Combiner Wars.

    5 - Hotspot

Hotspot numbered 3 out of five in the 3rd wave and he's 4th voyager in Combiner Wars line (5th is Cyclonus, or the other way around)

    Back View

    Character's Bio

Unlike the Deluxes, Hotspot comes with an instruction manual and also a collectors card, instead of a comic book.

However, instead of using artwork based on the figure, it is based on GDO Voyager Hotspot (Inferno mold).

    Alt Mode

    1 - Blades

Just like what people expected once the knew that Hasbro will be recycling the previous combiner wars mold, Blades uses Aerialbot Alpha Bravo's mold.

In alt mode, there's no difference between Blades and Alpha Bravo aside from the color scheme. Blades' alt mode in general suits him but he could've gone better without the missiles.

    Comparison with Alpha Bravo

Both the gun and the combiner's part are the same that came with Alpha Bravo before.

    2 - Rook

The newcomer, Rook, transform into an armored SWAT vehicle, something that surprises me considering he should be part of a rescue team.

Rook's alt mode is really solid and personally, I like him. The detailing are nicely done but with minimal to none paint application especially on the rims (as expected).

The alt mode feels solid albeit being a bit hollow, all the parts pegs in good and there's almost no visible robot parts anywhere.

Rook comes with a clamp as a weapon while the combiner part seems new, not recycled from previous releases.

    3 - First Aid

Next, First Aid. From the looks of his alt mode, it's hard to see that First Aid is actually a retool of Offroad from the previous wave.

I'm used to see Hasbro releasing a variant figure with new head, weapons or minor detailing but they went all out with First Aid up to a point that you can't see Offroad's alt mode at all.

The overall paint apps are nicely done but as usual with Hasbro releases, they won't pay any attention to the back part of the alt mode which in this case, no paint apps at all.

    Comparison with Offroad

Like I said, despite sharing the same mold, First Aid has been massively retooled to almost not look like Offroad at all in his alt mode.

But the weird thing despite the amount of retool done, First Aid carry the same axe and combiner part as Offroad.

    4 - Streetwise

My favorite alt mode of all the limbs, Streetwise, transform into a car that is based on R35 Nissan GTR police car.

Again just like First Aid, he was massively retooled from Dead End where the car shell is totally new.

Not sure how everybody elses Dead End but mine, the pegs for the legs/back part of the car is quite loose. Luckily Streetwise doesn't have that problem and the alt mode is really solid.

    Comparison with Dead End

As you can see, compared to Dead End, Streetwise is like a totally new mold rather than a variant of him.

However, based on my observation, the retools might be the reason why the Protectobots lack the paint apps and detailing compared to the Stunticons.

From my understanding, there's somewhat a fixed cost for every wave of releases. You can see from other lines, whenever there's new mold introduced, there must be a simple figure (lower production cost) included in the set. So if my understanding is correct, due to the cost of retooling for this wave, the detailing is not that well done compared to the previous wave. But, this is just my stupid baseless theory.

Streetwise comes with the same combiner part as Dead End but with different weapon. Again, it's quite surprising considering Hasbro didn't bother to give First Aid a new weapon to replace the axe.

    5 - Hotspot

The most anticipated of the set however, is Hotspot, the leader of the Protectobots.

I'm not sure whether the alt mode really exist but the front portion of it resembles a Rosenbauer Panther 6x6, the vehicle that was used as alt mode from Sentinel Prime in Dark of The Moon. The alt mode is quite light, not as I expected. The front part is quite hard to tab together properly so you need time to properly transform him without stressing the joints.

The black piece at the back of the alt mode is quite thin and not solid which is quite disappointing. Really hate thinking how low the quality and built of the figure now compared to CHRUG releases few years back. Hotspot's hands can be seen clearly from the back as there's no wrist joint and the hands are molded (see later in this review).

The base of the ladder can be rotated 360o and the ladder itself can be moved upwards but can't be extended.

    Group shots

Not sure how I'm going to say this but despite loving the group shots, there seems to be too many color involves that I don't really feel that they are a team. If I had to guessed, it maybe because of the darker blue on Streetwise and Hook as they don't match Hotspot's shade of blue (minor nitpick).

    Robot Mode

    1 - Blades

Moving on, we start with the figure that interest me the least, Blades. Like I said, he is a retool of Alpha Bravo but since only the head was changed, I can't really feel that he's a different character.

    Side View

For those who had problem with the rotor blades on Alpha Brave where they are quite loose making it hard to have them facing upwards, Blades is a lot better.

    Back View

Hasbro gave him a new head, good! But personally, the head sculpt was done quite poorly.

    Comparison with Alpha Bravo

Just like previous releases, the combiner part can be used as a handheld blaster but then again, don't really like it.

In general, the joints are tight which make posing him quite easy. He comes with a ball-jointed head and shoulders, ratchet joint on the elbows, swivel joint on the waist, ball-jointed hips and ratchet joint on the knees.

    2 - Rook

Despite not liking newcomer taking over, I personally like Rook. The transformation between mode is quite easy, much like any other newer figures nowadays.

He comes with a medium-size backpack which is not that bad and doesn't affect his stability despite not having heels to support him.

    Back View

The head sculpt is nicely done with clean finishing and detailing. It reminds me of an American Footballer's helmet a bit (or protective gears worn by the police)

The hands is quite weird as the 5mm ports are not on his hands but rather in front of them (also 5mm).

Rook doesn't come with any loose joints which is a good thing. He comes with a ball-jointed head and shoulders, ratchet joint on his elbows, waist swivel, ball-jointed hips, hinge on the knees and the best part, ankle tilts, something that doesn't often exist in the new Combiner Wars line.

The hollow legs are quite a turn off however since it's due to the transformation, nothing much I can say about it.

Since the 5mm port on the hands are facing forward, using the combiner part as handheld weapon looks a bit out there. Luckily, it can be properly stored on his back.

The clamp can be attached to the front part of the hands which is a unique way of doing it. And I don't mind at all. But if this was done few years back, the hands must be able to be folded inside or the fists slid inwards into the arms.

    3 - First Aid

First Aid transformation is straight forward and bears no difference to Offroad's transformation despite the massive retooled that can be seen in his alt mode.

    Side View

    Back View

The head sculpt is nicely done, homaging G1 First Aid, no question. Before this, there was a conversion kit transforming TF:Prime Ratchet to First Aid. Now you have First Aid.

    Comparison with Offroad

Despite the same transformation sequence, First Aid robot mode is also different from Offroad, not only his alt mode.

Not only the head, almost all parts of First Aid's body are different from Offroad, head to toe, back to front.

    Back View

First Aid comes with ball-jointed head and shoulders, ratchet joint on the elbows, waist swivel and hinge on the knees. He doesn't have wrist joint nor ankle tilts.

    4 - Streetwise

Next, Streetwise, retooled of my favorite Combiner Wars Stunticons, Dead End, which not only shows in alt mode but also in robot mode. The overall joints are a lot better than Dead End which really made me happy as Dead End was a bit disappointing.

    Side View

    Back View

Hasbro did great designing the head sculpt which almost homage G1 Streetwise to the letter with clean paint apps all over. His chest is painted black without any highlights or anything to resemble G1 Streetwise who had his windshield on his chest.

    Comparison with Dead End

Streetwise comes with a new head, chest piece and also lower legs, enough to differentiate him from Dead End.

From what can be seen in alt mode, the hood is also different.

The mold itself has good articulation already but with better joints, the figure is really fun to play with.

Streetwise comes with a ball-jointed head and shoulders, hinge on the elbows and wrists (from transformation), waist swivel, ball-jointed hips and ratchet joints on the knees.

Streetwise comes with a shotgun which is fitting his police aesthetic.

    5 - Hotspot

I remembered how excited people were when Hotspot's pictures were revealed. Having him in hand, he looks even better. The shade of blue used resembles G1 Hotspot's, a good homage to his G1 character. The transformation is quite simple aside from the ladder part as you need to be familiar with it first.

    Side View

    Back View

Again, Hasbro nailed the sculpt for Hotspot (although he was also seen in the G1 cartoon with mouth rather than mouth plate but I personally like this version better). Not only that, the red chest piece and the deco on the shoulders are actually based on G1 Hotspot's toy.

    Comparison with Silverbolt

Hotspot is half-a-head taller than Silverbolt which is still acceptable, not too tall him look out of place when put besides Silverbolt. Hotspot comes with 2 blasters homaging G1 Hotspot's "Fireball Cannons".

    Articulation wise, he doesn't disappoint.

Hotspot comes with a ball-jointed head (limited movement), hinge and swivel on the shoulders, double-jointed elbows, ratchet joints on the hips and double-jointed knees. It's a pity however that he doesn't come with any articulation on his hands (molded) and waist as that would've made him even better.

In general, Hotspot might feel a bit light and hollow but the overall figure is not bad. In fact, he's my favorite out of the 3 team leaders so far.

    The Protectobots

One might not like the combiners of the line so far but I think it's undeniable the individual modes look better than any 3rd party releases. I liked the Aerialbots and Stunticons before and now, I freaking love Hasbro's Protectobots.

Despite the 2 fail points (1 unoriginal member and the fact that 3 out of 5 are retool figures), the Protectobots really feel like a nice update to the characters, balancing G1 homage and new design.

    Autobot Combiners

The review of Defensor will be done in 2-3 days, hopefully. Sorry for the delay, hope you guys can be patient.

BTW, another reason why I like the Combiner Wars so far is that (excluding Leader class as they didn't exist before in CHRUG lines) in just 3 waves, we already had 4 unique voyager class figures and 12 unique deluxe class figures as the only time previous release was included in new wave was in Wave 2 where included Silverbolt again. Whereas in previous lines, you'll be seeing half of the figures included in other wave, sometime more than once.

Combiner Wars line will continue until 2016 but for this year, what else do we have coming? As far as being revealed, there are Deluxe Quickslinger (Slingshot) and Wild Rider (Break Neck),  Leader Class Thundercracker (in this wave also), Ultra Magnus, Titan Devastator and.....well, that's it?
